The State: Social/Antisocial?

Traffic, Dubai, Dubai, 09/22/2011 - 10/22/2011

ABOUT

For this show The Third Line gallery has invited Rami Farook (UAE, 1981) – curator and patron – to delve into the vaults of its collection and extract works that continue his conversation on the state of the world today.

‘THE STATE: SOCIAL / ANTISOCIAL?’ resumes a conversation explored in both ‘THE STATE’, 2010 – an inaugural exhibition held at Traffic where the works selected questioned the socio-political state post September 11th; and ‘THE STATE: UPPERS & DOWNERS’, 2011 - a commentary on the global condition, from an economic perspective, with the city of Dubai as a focal point.

This third volume of, ‘THE STATE: SOCIAL / ANTISOCIAL?’ combines works from the collection of The Third Line gallery, Traffic as well as The Farook Collection, and takes place at both The Third Line and Traffic’s galleries.

This exhibition aims to move beyond mere presentation and aspires to act as a forum on socialization and the current state of people and behavior.

Through the artworks selected, the show puts a mirror up to the face of society and invites it to observe, reflect and question the social, psychological and emotional subjects in the works.

‘THE STATE: SOCIAL / ANTISOCIAL?’, highlights how and what we, as social entities operating in society, address, express, fear, love, hate, respect, or despise, which in turn defines us both as individuals and as a collective.
Artists such as Arwa Abouon and Slavs and Tatars question our belief in faith, tradition, and ritual.

Whereas, artists like Fouad Elkhoury, Hassan Hajjaj, Ahmed Mater and Hesam Rahmanian document the everyday in all its glory.

At the same time Tracey Emin, Susan Hefuna, Damien Hirst, Huda Lutfi, Youssef Nabil and Akram Zaatari depict how we express emotions, nostalgia, and memory.

Moreover, Banksy, James Clar, Abdulnasser Gharem and Aman Mojadidi addresses the anti-social in some of us.
The works in ‘THE STATE: SOCIAL / ANTISOCIAL?’ take the viewer on a journey of self discovery which has the artworks at its starting point, contemplation as its road, and self revelation as its ultimate destination.
