INTERRUPTIONS AND IMPERFECTIONS

In this series of photographs Rui Calçada Bastos engages in a brief phenomenological survey of certain gestalts of continuity and discontinuity to be found in everyday situations. What is true enough to validate experience? Rui Calçada Bastos proposes not an answer but a poetic relationship to this question. The images in these photographs look into such perennial issues as the dot-and-line relationship, extending into the relativity of the space-time continuum and its experiencing by human subjects. In this set of photographs, Bastos also looks into the pretense of objective knowledge in the face of interruptions and imperfections in habitual expectations, which, in this instance, occur as perceptions of trac lines drawn on asphalt that have been interfered with or simply had to conform with other elements necessary to urban life. Trac lines are also manifestations of the law, and this aspect continues the artist’s political and sociological commentary seen in previous series, albeit from a more abstract perspective.
