ABOUT

Outer Seed Shadow (OSS) by APT artist Juanli Carrión is a series of public art interventions that materializes the union between plant and human interaction, using different plant species as representatives of social groups or individuals. OSS It is an investigation that can happen at different geographic levels—county, city, borough, neighborhood, district, block or building—.

La Conservera Contemporary Art Center will be showing OSS#VSM, a new garden from the OSS series about the local idiosyncrasies of Vega Media del Segura--the county in which the center resides.

Continuing the series of OSS, the garden installed at the Center for Contemporary Art Canning is home to the geographical boundaries of the region of Vega Media del Segura in Murcia. This time garden plants have been selected after conducting an investigation into the cultural identity of this region and more specifically about the idiosyncratic relations of the five municipalities that comprise: Ceuta, Lorquí, Alguazas and Cotillas Towers Molina de Segura. Each municipality is represented here by a distinct variety of pepper; Lamuyo Green, Ball, California Red, California California Green and Yellow. The number of plants in each garden plot is determined according to the population density in each municipality, with the densest Ceuta. OSS # VMS is the first garden in the series conducted inside, for what lamps are installed growth that favored the development of plants during the two months of exposure.

The pepper is considered a symbol of the cuisine of the region of Murcia, besides being one of the vegetables with which they worked in the canning plant hosts and gives its name to the center. However pepper has its origins in Mexico, where it came along with many other plants now considered as the standard of the local and regional cuisine.

The main objective of OSS # VMS is to generate a dialogue about coexistence, idiosyncrasies and cultural appropriations in the Vega Media del Segura, materializing its derivatives relations garden. Identity is a matter of heritage, background and education. To represent these aspects in a garden becomes easier to view, participate and understand these relationships, latent in each municipality, but sometimes are complex to address by residents because of its magnitude. Using the artistic process and its educational capabilities OSS # VMS creates a space for dialogue about this conflict and social relationships using plants as main materials.
