The Singapore Show: Future Proof

SAM at 8Q, Singapore, 01/14/2012 - 04/15/2012

ABOUT

In producing a print, a ‘proof’ is the test sheet made to reveal flaws, forecast results and record how a print is intended to appear. Meanwhile ‘future proof’ in techno speak, is the process in ensuring that data is stored in a format that continues to be relevant and accessible in the future, minimising possible negative consequences.

Since the birth of contemporary practice in Singapore, signalled by the formation of The Artists Village and landmark exhibition, Trimurti (both 1988), as well as other collectives such as 5th Passage, artists here have been exploring various traipses of creative work, from sculpture and paintings to performance art, site-specific installation art, graphic design and interactive media. Future Proof presents artworks by a mix of exciting young artists with innovative and original art practices within their disciplines. Their artistic ventures take place from streets to galleries, their concerns local to geopolitical, their materials both found and acquired. Their strong and consistent presence in the local and international contemporary art landscape has helped enliven the local creative scene and inspired the birth of numerous other self-taught artists in Singapore.

Presented in galleries, corridors and street sides all at the same time; drawing from SAM’s permanent collection and special commissions, reinforced with artworks from the personal collection of respective artists, Future Proof offers a measure on the psyche, materiality and consequence in the contemporary art practice of Singapore today.
The Singapore Show: Future Proof is a parallel event of Art Stage Singapore 2012.
