TIỂU SỬ

Born in 1974 in France, Isabelle Cornaro lives and works in Paris. Cornaro uses a range of media including drawing, photography, video and, more recently, installation. Her works often reference animated films, iconic landscape design and exhibition views, sourced from historical and cultural archives. Her practice counter-intuitively employs a conceptual approach to investigate the ways in which objects and artworks are propped up, animated and fetishized. Cornaro’s constructed arrangements abstract and schematize familiar objects specifically selected for their sentimental or symbolic value, as a means of triggering a semiotic reading of these objects as opposed to an affected sense of recognition. Informed by the notions of the gaze and the screen, Cornaro’s works recurrently dramatize pictorial systems, such as the classical rules of perspective, to critically reflect upon their involvement in ideological constructions of space.

Isabelle Cornaro solo show include Palais de Tokyo, Paris (2015), Kunsthalle Bern (curated by Fabrice Stroun), Bern, Switzerland (2013). Past exhibitions include: FRAC (Regional Fund for Contemporary Art), Aquitaine, France (2011), Inside the White Cube, White Cube, London, England; Le Magasin (curated by Yves Aupetitallot), Grenoble, France; Frac Aquitaine (curated by Claire Jacquet), Bordeaux, France (2012), group exhibition at ARTISSIMA 2012, Turin; FIAC 2012 (with Balice Hertling), Paris; Squat#1 (with Balice Hertling, Nilufar Gallery & Dimore Studio), Private Appartment, Paris; Rotary Connection (curated by Loring Randolph), Casey Kaplan, New York (2012), solo exhibitions and projects at Frieze Art Fair, with Balice Hertling, London (2009), Gavin Brown, New York (2009), Dia Center, New York (2009), BaliceHertling, Paris (2009), Kunstverein für die Rheinlande und Westfalen, Düsseldorf (2009) and La Ferme du Buisson (with Stéphanie Nava), Noisiel, France (2008).
