In 1988, he was awarded the Kunstpreis Glockengasse (Cologne) and the Preis des Kulturkreises des Bundes der Deutschen Industrie(Art award, German Industrial Association). In 1996, he received the Stankowski Award and in 1997, the ZKM/Siemens Medienkunstpreis (ZKM Media Art Award). He was a Distinguished Discussion Partner at the World Economic Forum’s 2000 meeting in Davos, Switzerland. In 2003 he received the biennial Sprengel Award of the Sprengel Museum, Hanover. 2006/07 he taught as a visiting professor at the Tokyo University of the Arts (Geijutsu Daigaku). He is currently an adviser to the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation in Tokyo, Japan; an independent researcher at Indiana University (Bloomington campus); an adviser and artistic director of Tokyo's oldest Zen Temple, the Tochiji Temple in Shinjuku-ku; and an adviser to the New York Hall of Science.
