Born in 1971 in Albertslund, Denmark, Jakob Kolding lives and works in Berlin. Kolding’s work examines different concepts of space. Starting from an early interest in modernist planning and the use of urban and suburban space his focus developed into a more general interest in the complex socio-economic and political conditions of city life, extending to more abstract notions of space including mental and psychological ones.
Throughout his body of work it has been crucial for Kolding to never consider these different spheres as entirely separate, but, on the contrary, to see space as a process of interrelations, as constant movement, and never simply as a static physical form. The works thus bring together a broad variety of subjects such as literature, urban planning, football, architecture, art, skateboarding, comics, computer games and music, and from weaving them together new possible spaces and narratives arise.

Jakob Kolding has exhibited in museums and galleries internationally, including the Neubauer Collegium, Chicago; Kunsthalle Wien; Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; Stedelijk Museum Bureau Amsterdam; Frankfurter Kunstverein; Museum Villa Stuck, Munich; Kunstverein in Hamburg; CCA Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts, San Francisco; the Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego; and the University of Michigan Museum of Art, Ann Arbor. His work is included in numerous public collections including the Museum of Modern Art in New York. He is represented by Team Gallery, New York; Galeri Nicolai Wallner, Copenhagen; and Galerie Martin Janda, Vienna.
