ABOUT

Pony Project is pleased to present Macarena Ruiz-Tagle’s first solo exhibition with the gallery. Entitled Relation of aspect, the show features 14 individual pieces, in dimensions ranging from 76 x 56 cm to 120 x 160 cm on a new series of abstract works showing monochrome colour saturations as a recent version of the Atmosphere Series that began in 2013. The pieces are made from watercolour paper in raw wooden frames and wooden panels that illustrate progressions of colour fields. There is a palpable tension in their hypnotic circular rhythms that raises curiosity about the way in which the continuous colour progressions are created. When observed from a close distance, one can see the detailed pigmentation of the paper. Seen from afar, the colour vibration appears to the eye as one tries to focus on the mesmerizing surface, creating a subtle after image with blurry edges or what the artist refers to as atmospheres.

Inspired by the seaside landscape at Coliumo during Casa Poli artist in residence in Chile, the works depict a collection of shades reflected on the horizon during different moments of the day. Influenced by the position of the sun, the climate and the proximity of the Pacific Ocean, the paintings grasp families of colour temperatures found in sunny, foggy and rainy days during sunsets in the venture of transporting daylight through abstraction.

Moreover, the circular, red and cyan, dichroic glass is the key for us to enter and experience, together with the public, the landscapes of Coliumo in Berlin. Glass as a tool to experience light in a personal performative act is available at the gallery for us to take a look and interact. Red and cyan are known as functional hues that represent 3D vision for the human eye in photography, thus becoming a very intriguing trail for interpretation in the era of total digitalization.

Ruiz-Tagle’s interest in colour has its roots in her investigation of the possibilities of the human eye and the interaction of light on different surfaces. Her distilled and concentrated pieces are based on the body´s subtle subjective experience of spatial perception and optical phenomena, often creating immersive environments for direct interaction.
