suckstract

Städtische Galerie Remscheid, 06/14/2014 - 08/31/2014

ABOUT

Abstraction in painting is booming. After the so-called figurative has notably received greater public interest in the beginning of the last decade, it is abstract variants that combine free gesture and geometric structures alike that have increasingly attracted attention over the past few years. Whereas numerous exhibitions focused on overviews on the theme of abstraction, "Suckstract" rather revolves around the meaning of the term abstraction itself.

The work in this show focuses on reduction of form and material as an essential element of abstraction. At the same time it shows a variety of possible surface textures, from textile structures to those related to the digital. This group show combines different concepts and realisations of abstraction, from pragmatic reduction to emotional placements and ironic quotes. There is also work that integrates sculptural elements, helping painting out of its medial isolation, and rewarding it with spatial attention. The neologism "Suckstract" describes the visual "pull" or "vortex" resulting from this approach and highlights the variety of media in contemporary painting.
