Born in 1969 in Alzira, Spain, Jorge Peris lives and works in Madrid. Peris creates site-specific environments that alter the fabric of their host location, often precipitating the latter into a premature state of decay. His immersive works simulate nature’s entropic processes in an accelerated form. These environments are more than simple spatial interventions that generate a sense of dislocation and the uncanny through a series of architectural alterations; they possess a unique temporal dimension. Some appear to speed up the passage of time by lending shape to minute and invisible material transformations, while others seem to suspend time, provoking the shock and awe associated with disaster by drawing upon the language of the sublime. Peris’ work ‘Fairy’ (2008) consisted of a room covered in 10,000 kg of clay kept humid through a sprinkler system, suggesting both a pre-historical cave and a building in ruin after a catastrophic landslide.
