  • The 31st Bienal de São Paulo "Things that don’t exist” is a poetic invocation of art’s ability to create new objects, thoughts and possibilities. The sentence has a variable formula that constantly changes, anticipating the actions that might make present in contemporary life the things that don’t exist, are not recognized, or have not yet been invented. With 81 projects and more than 100 participants from 34 countries, totaling around 250 artworks on display, the exhibition has been conceived as journey through the Pavilion divided into three different areas: park area, ramp area and columns area.

BIOGRAPHY

Based in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, the artists Liesbeth Bik and Jos van der Pol have been collaborating together as  Bik Van der Pol since 1995. Bik Van der Pol’s practice explores the potentialities rooted in the local and the public. Utilizing aesthetics’ capacity to make things visible, their works reveal specific places or histories that have disappeared, have been abandoned or left unwritten. Often creating site-specific installations and participatory projects, Bik Van der Pol’s on-going research examines how knowledge is generated and disseminated within the shared public domain. Their works intervene within set contexts, re-framing particular places that might have gone un-noticed by filling in gaps or by shedding light on specific elements through programmatic actions. For instance, their video and installation project “Trinity (April 2, 2005)” deals with the politics surrounding the nuclear bomb’s original test site. Bik Van der Pol’s practice also involves re-visiting other artists’ work; they have notably explored Lee Lozano’s practice and imagined an alternative artist space called “Good”, inspired by Gordon Matta-Clark’s cooperative cantine “Food”.

Bik van der Pol have recently presented solo exhibitions at “Pump House Gallery” London (2009), Marie Louise Hessel Museum/CCS Bard College, Annondale-on-Hudson, NY (2008), Van AbbeMuseum, Eindhoven (2007/2008/2009), Insa Art Space, Seoul (2006) and the New Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam (2006). Their work has also been shown as part of “The Spectacle of the Everyday”, the 10th Lyon Biennial, Lyon (2009), “U-Turn”, the Quadrennial for Contemporary Art, Copenhagen (2008), “For Reasons of State” at ISP Whitney, New York (2008), “Istanbul, 59 Locations, A Format for Nightcomers”, the 10th Istanbul Biennial (2007), European Kunsthalle: Models for Tomorrow, Cologne (2007) and the 2nd Moscow Biennale (2007). They have been awarded the Enel Contemporanea Award 2010.
