IMPRESSIONS is a targeted campaign examining new ways of looking. Mimicking the appropriative gestures of advertising and prosumer media, Mayer’s direct message explores what can be obtained from a face.
With IMPRESSIONS, Mayer continues to playfully subvert the relationship between contemporary object and viewer, engaging the emotional and rhetorical tools of marketing to simulate the leakages of facial recognition information onto identity and behavior everywhere else. Mapping the intersection of biometrics and the politics of pattern recognition, Mayer’s Impressions poignantly probes what it means for the human body to be calculable and algorithmically legible.
