TENTANG

Kate Owens APT artist is participating the exhibition "Fancy Papers". The name was a term adopted by Victorian paper manufacturers who used the phrase to refer to a wide variety of printed and patterned papers. At Tenderbooks CommonRoom will show four wallpapers designed by contemporary artists Goshka Macuga, Kate Owens, James Ferris and Kate Hawkins. A work by each artist will accompany their wallpaper.

Tenderbooks has commissioned CommonRoom to design a collection of wrapping paper and cards.

About Kate Owens design

Kate’s design uses registration marks from a nineteenth century William Morris block-printed wallpaper called Pink & Rose. Block Printing is the first known method of wallpaper printing dating back to the sixteenth century. Dead End concentrates on the marks made by the bearer bands and registration pins used by the block printer to align each layer of colour in a wallpaper design. These marks appear along the edge of every roll of wallpaper until it’s trimmed for distribution. This minimal design inverts traditionally ornate wallpaper patterns and reveals only these working marks usually cut off. Its surface-printed technique also echoes the style of old block prints.
