ABOUT

The series “Imperfect Barriers” takes the unraveling diamond grid of a chain-link fence as its starting point, at once an abstract pattern and a depiction of a physical structure. The chain-link fence is a ubiquitous part of our built environment, and a signifier for the urban landscape; it stands between landscape and architecture.

The inherent tension in this spatial barrier is made visible through the disruption in form produced when the fence is cut open and then stitched back together. The resulting patchwork is the trace of an unwilling collaboration between opposite sides.

The large scale works on paper that belong to the series “Imperfect Barriers” focus on these moments of conflict. The paintings depict sections of fence at life size, bestowing them with a strong physical, illusionistic presence. The grid loses its rigidity, not only due to the source material, but also through the process of tracing and layering ink and watercolor. The context of the fences is left unspecified, leaving in doubt which side of the fence one is on.
