HET WILDE WESTEN VAN BUFFALO BILL TOT BOBBEJAAN

Hedendaagse kunst in confrontatie met Westernobjecten en artefacten

van 18 februari tot en met 14 mei in de Expozaal

 

Het westen van Amerika werd op het einde van de 19de eeuw omgedoopt tot het ‘Wilde Westen’, een land vol cowboys, indianen, goudzoekers, pelsjagers, schurken en ontdekkingsreizigers. Het stond synoniem voor de vrijheid en de overlevingsdrang van de pioniers maar ook voor wetteloosheid en geweld. Het was een onuitputtelijke inspiratiebron voor schrijvers, kunstenaars en filmmakers. Hun geromantiseerde en gedramatiseerde versie had echter weinig te maken met de historische realiteit. De mythe van het WildeWesten was geboren. Deze tentoonstelling toont het ware verhaal van het Wilde Westen. Ze gaat over het ontstaan van de mythe en vertelt hoe deze ook in België razend populair werd.

 

Honderden westernobjecten en indiaanse artefacten, historische foto’s en filmpjes, originele striptekeningen en filmaffiches, opgezette dieren en speelgoed in een spannende dialoog met tientallen kunstwerken van Tilo Baumgärtel (DL), Fred Bervoets (BE), Guillaume Bijl (BE), Sébastian Bonin (BE), Martha Colburn (VS), Diego Franssens (BE), R.C. Gorman (VS), Tom Liekens (BE), Kylie Manning (VS), Malcolm Morley (VS), Nadia Naveau (BE), Pjeroo Roobjee (BE), Frederic Remington (BE), Fritz Scholder VS), Sven ‘t Jolle (BE), Edgard Tytgat (BE), Camiel Van Breedam (BE), Philippe Vandenberg (BE) en Eric Wansart (BE).

 

Naast de vele bijzondere westernobjecten en artefacten, strips, filmaffiches en speelgoed worden ook tientallen kunstwerken van Belgische topkunstenaars getoond. Al deze kunstenaars vonden op één of andere wijze hun inspiratie in de mythische wereld van het Wilde Westen.

 

Een prikkelende tentoonstelling over Buffalo Bill, Bonanza en Bobbejaan, over Wounded Knee en Winnetou, over The Good the Bad and the Ugly, over Lucky Luke, over Tomahawks en tipi’s, over Manneken Pis, over cowboys en indianen.

 

De tentoonstelling wordt samengesteld door Frank Herreman (gewezen conservator van het Etnografisch Museum van Antwerpen) en Tom Liekens (kunstenaar).

The American West was at the end of the 19th century renamed the 'Wild West', a land of cowboys, Indians, prospectors, trappers, villains and explorers. It was synonymous with the freedom and survival of the pioneers but also for lawlessness and violence. It was an inexhaustible source of inspiration for writers, artists and filmmakers. Their romanticized and dramatized version had little to do with historical reality. The myth of the Wild West was born. This exhibition shows the true story of the Wild West. It is about the origin of the myth and tells how it was also very popular in Belgium. 

 

Hundreds westernobjecten and Indian artifacts, historical photographs and films, original striptekeningen and filmaffiches, stuffed animals and toys in an exciting dialogue with dozens of works by Tilo Baumgärtel (DL), Fred Bervoets (BE), Guillaume Bijl (BE), Sebastian Bonin (BE ), Martha Colburn (USA), Diego Franssens (BE), RC Gorman (USA), Tom Liekens (BE), Kylie Manning (USA), Malcolm Morley (USA), Nadia Naveau (BE), Pjeroo Roobjee (BE) Frederic Remington (BE), Fritz Scholder USA), Sven 't Jolle (BE), Edgard Tytgat (BE), Camiel Van Breedam (BE), Philippe Vandenberg (BE) and Eric Wansart (BE).

 

In addition to the many special objects and artifacts western, comics, movie posters and toys dozens of works by Belgian artists are also shown. All of these artists were in some way inspired by the mythical world of the Wild West.
