'Minority/Majority'

Majority-Minority, to run from 21 January 2017 to 29 April 2017, will showcase three of Sabsabi’s works that highlight the complexities of a migrant experience within Western Sydney, placing a particular focus on the multicultural Fairfield area.

The new exhibition’s title responds to the shift of migrant groups being the minority within the broader Australian community to becoming a defining voice and growing majority across contemporary society.

Sabsabi, a Bonnyrigg resident, was awarded the inaugural Western Sydney Arts Fellowship in 2015 for his contribution to the local art scene and this exhibition is a major drawcard in Fairfield City Museum & Gallery’s 2017 calendar.

Mayor of Fairfield City Frank Carbone spoke highly of the upcoming exhibition.

“Khaled Sabsabi’s works are immensely powerful in captivating what it’s like for a migrant in this country,” Mayor Carbone said.

“He has had his work exhibited in every continent, bar Antarctica, a perfect example of the extraordinary talent that exists within our City’s diverse community.”

Born in 1965 in Tripoli, Lebanon, Sabsabi migrated with his family to Australia in 1978 due to civil war. He began his creative life as a hip-hop performer in the mid-1980s before he later developed a special interest in multi-media and site-specific installations.
