ABOUT

The Galerie Dukan is proud to present the next exhibi on “Under In uence” curated by Michaela K. Kühn! It is the rst of three exhibi ons of the curators open call “Curated By” award winners. The compe on was wri en-out by the Galerie Dukan last year.

The works of the exhibi on “Under In uence” re ect highly diverse in uences and talk about its impact on the ar st and its art. “The American director John Cassavetes (1929-1989) shows in his movie “Woman Under The In uence” (1974) an ordinary American woman who is exposed to the daily in uences like family, household and partnership, which oppress her own needs. Because of these reasons she becomes a borderline crosser. At the same me she feels mental changes, provoking a li le “nervous breakdown”. Thanks to this lm, Cas- savetes succeeds a cinema c masterpiece and with his wife Gena Rowlands in Mabel’s role, the lm is one of the most impressive samples of the history of Cinema.

During lming Cassavetes and Rowlands su er also from di erent in uences like nancial di cul es, extreme long shoo ng me (2 years) and unsuccessful search for lm distribu- on. These circumstances made their work drama cally complicate but could not reach their absolute wish to realize the lm.”

How do social restraints, pressure to perform and the push of op miza on in uence ar sts’ crea ons ? Which meaning experiences through the daily impact is the ar st exposed to? In which dimension they nd one’s way into the awareness of the viewer? The exhibi on shows a fascina ng width of in uences the ar sts deal with or act under them. Instead of mee ng around the viewer encounter works with metaphorical power that move from fragile indica- on to brutal self-staging - cri cal re ec on meets sexual desires and existen al disrup on. The freeing moment is a healthy por on of irony many works send o . That clears the way for a gender comprehensive access to the exhibi on.

Alienated movie scenes of Cassavetes “Woman Under The In uence” (1974), which are here understood like a room installa on, e ect the artworks like a transparent layer erasing the contrasts and provoke a percep ve violon of approach and confronta on.

Vis-à-vis we can see the artworks of the female ar sts of MalerinnenNetzWerk Berlin - Leipzig, which present themselves a er two successful exhibi ons in Berlin the rst me in Leip- zig: Ann-Katrin Scha ner (Berlin), Alex Tennigkeit (Berlin), Be na Sellmann (Berlin), Caro Suerkemper (Berlin), Catherine Lorent (Berlin), Corinne von Lebusa (Leipzig), Eva Schwab (Berlin), Franziska Gue ler (Leipzig), Gudrun Petersdor (Leipzig), Heike Kelter (Berlin), Isa- belle Dutoit (Leipzig), Jus ne O o (Berlin/Hamburg), Kathrin Landa (Berlin), Kathrin Thiele (Leipzig), Marie Gold (Leipzig), Maria Sainz Rueda (Leipzig), Marianna Krueger (Berlin), Nina K.
