Katie Herzog's new photographic series, Research, serves as a continuation of her ongoing artistic investigation into gender and knowledge production in the civic sphere. A humorous narrative plays out through multiple photographs in various public library branches: Herzog hikes up her skirt, pulls down her underwear, and sits on the copy machine made available for public use. Drawing from a rich art herstory including Annie Sprinkle's “Public Cervix Announcement” and Barbara T. Smith's XEROX works, Research presents the act of representation as a systematic investigation for the advancement of human knowledge.
