ABOUT

We are delighted to present in collaboration with Griffin Gallery, I Lost My Heart to a Starship Trooper, a group exhibition that brings together the work of ten artists to investigate the phenomenon of appropriation and influence on contemporary art practice. The exhibition’s title comes from the 1978 Hot Gossip song of the same name, which Glenn Brown used for one of his paintings, a meticulous rendition of a Rembrandt. This juxtaposition of old and almost sacred with modern and popular - a collision of Stars Wars and the Baroque - was in part the genesis of the exhibition.

While all of the featured works open up myriad lines of inquiry, from challenging notions of value and authorship to examining modern morality, the show is in essence about the artists’ relationship with the art historical canon, from Old Masters to the present. Works selected for the exhibition feature a wide variety of materials including drawing, silkscreen, video, marble resin, crystal, plastic, 3-D printing, plasticine and paint.
