ABOUT

On the 30th of September (Friday) 7:30PM at Pėmenkalnio Gallery, we introduce you the presentation of Berlin-based artist Nezaket Ekici. In the video performance (8 channel installation) "Tooth for Tooth - In memory of the murdered women in Turkey" the artist Nezaket Ekici works on the daily assaults and acts of violence against women in Turkey, which usually lead to death of women: honor killings, jealousy dramas, divorce cases, rape, robbery and much more.

The artist will be participating in the presentation in Vilnius for the first time.

The artist invited different women from Turkey to participate in the video projecton behalf of the victims. Each of these women and the artist deal with one case that touches them personally. The performers act against the black background in black clothes. The camera focuses on the face, head and feet. The performers fight in the style of a shadow boxer with hands, feets and verbally in front of the camera. A kind of posthumous self-defense.

Nezaket Ekici will give an artist talk at the opening of the exhibition in Vilnius. She will discuss her artistic strategies and cultural contexts with a curator Laima Kreivytė. It will be a continuation of the discussion on everyday war and (in)visible violence started at the “Postidea IV. War” exhibition. "Tooth for Tooth - In memory of the murdered women in Turkey" video performance has been shown at the Centre of Contemporary Art in Torun and will be part of the exhibition “Uncertain States – Artistic Strategies in States of Emergency” at the the Akademie der Künste in Berlin this Fall.

Nezaket Ekici was born in Turkey in 1970 and moved to Germany in 1973 with her family. She lives and works in Berlin and Stuttgart. Nezaket studied painting and sculpture in Munich, then moved into performance art and completed a master’s degree in Performance Art with Marina Abramovic in Braunschweig in 2004. She has presented her work worldwide in museums, biennales, galleries and festivals; with a total of more as 200 different performances, on 4 continents, more than 150 cities and 50 countries.

Her work touches on gender, politics, religion, Turkish-German identity, art history and architecture. Ekici’s ideas come from the social and cultural aspects of everyday life situations, and are expressed in performances and installations. Most often she uses her own body as a means of expression.
