ABOUT

In the night, everything has disappeared. When everything has disappeared in the night, “everything has disappeared” appears. Within the empty darkness rises a bright night where, like a dream, things that are invisible like ghosts show up.

There are private footsteps that turn towards the night. Some try to step into what is original and essential; however, unable to reach the destination, they end up wandering about the outside of the night. It is a journey in vain repeated by those who embrace the day again and live through the bright day.

These nights, which Maurice Blanchot called ‘the first night’ and ‘the other night’, are identical to the experiences of artists facing artistic inspirations. They are attempts that head towards somewhere deeper in search of things that have no forms. However, they are impossibilities that will never be completed, and nights which we face again, knowing they are endless.

The Edge of Night is an exhibition which tries to determine the outline that night. They are nights which eight artists, Hyunmo Koo, Kichul Kim, Mikyung Kim, Yunsoo Kim, Yun-Hee Toh, Jina Park, Dongwook Suh and Leehaiminsun, observe. They are not the nights of physical time but nights as concept and artistic experience. They are nights that fall unto everyone, yet they are nights that become silent, and nights which all are different.

In this exhibition, diverse perspectives on the night are being shown; from scenes of night walks after the sun has set, in the city fallen with dusk, which we may have had at least once in our lifetime, meditations and contemplations on the night to unfamiliar landscapes, which we might have seen in dreams, created by gathering fragments of the real world. As you ascend the first, second and third floor of the exhibition, in this autumn, there will unfold nights of each of the artists, each drawn from the tip of their fingers.
