Artists Now! Guest Lecture Series: Pedro Velez

Peck School of the Arts, Wisconsin, Milwaukee, 09/14/2016

2400 E. Kenwood Blvd. Milwaukee, WI 53211

ABOUT

Art Journalism, Gossip and Listicles

The lecture will focus on how the artist merges his interest in art criticism (including his own writing) and journalism into what he calls “visual essays” that take the form of large sculptural paintings, photographic collages, and limited edition posters and postcards. Velez also incorporates hashtags lifted from Twitter that are scathingly critical as well as poetically cryptic. Taken together, Vélez’s multi-disciplinary approach creates a vibrant, stream-of-consciousness commentary on a variety of issues, encompassing race, politics, and other aesthetic concerns.

The Department of Art & Design proudly presents the 10th season of Artists Now!, a Wednesday evening lecture series designed for a broad audience with an interest in contemporary visual art. It presents a diverse group of artists working across traditional, hybrid and emergent disciplines. Join these nationally and inter- nationally recognized practitioners as they explore and expand the boundaries of creative visual practice today. This lecture is co-sponsored by SOFKAG

All lectures take place on Wednesdays at 7:30 pm in the Arts Center Lecture Hall on the UWM campus. FREE and open to the public!
