Errand Into The Maze

The original program from the first performance of Martha Graham’s Errand Into The Maze in 1947 notes, “The action has its core in that errand-journey into the maze of the heart in order to face and do battle with the Creature of Fear. There is the accomplishment of the errand, the instant of triumph, the emergence from the dark.” Graham’s dance serves as inspiration and a departure point to consider the work of these four visual artists. For our exhibition, pattern, rhythm, and repetition are engaged as a means to access, express and explore a range of intentions. Just as Martha Graham reimagined Ariadne course the maze and emerge from the dark, the artists assembled here each chart their own path towards discovery.
