Beyond Cold Polished Stones

20*20 House Gallery, Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, 06/25/2016 - 07/30/2016

ABOUT

The title comes from a paraphrase of a quotation from a book by James Joyce, "Giacomo Joyce." The book is a love poem compiled from hand-written notes found and published after Joyce's death. The full quote reads: "My words in her mind: cold polished stones sinking through a quagmire."

This show is a focus on a place that has been shared, experienced or is being experienced. The artists included span many years and routes to the shared space. The ties to Lansdowne overlap and/or repeat in many instances but not all. What are these people making or what have they made? This show is macro regionalism. It is a magnifying glass on a place but from a specific angle, mine and the artists included. This is only one show, but there could be many more that differ or resemble this exhibition. The work included in Beyond ColdPolished Stones is varied, as are the participants' ties to Lansdowne. On one end there are oil paintings from the early 20th century by Ralph Phaedon Lewars, and in the very present, an installation by Beth Heinly about the Lansdowne ghosts. There is even more in-between. - Anthony Campuzano
