EXHIBITION

Making is Thinking is Making

La Triennale di Milano, Lombardia, Milan, 04/02/2016 - 09/12/2016

Viale Emilio Alemagna, 6, 20121 Milano, Italy

ABOUT

What would be the meaning and value of craft in today’s environment where much of production process relies on computers? Our inquiry into the future of craft began with “Making is thinking”: Richard Sennett’s declaration in The Craftsman. We asked craftspeople, designers, artists, theorists, and curators how the process of making and thinking interact with each other in actual production process. Using collective knowledge, we explored the meaning of contemporary craftspersonship. This exhibition is the result of our effort.

The exhibition was made possible by the collective efforts of archivists, exhibition designers, curators, and many more. To properly understand craft, it is not enough to focus merely on resulted objects. Therefore, the exhibition purports to examine the importance of craft within social and cultural contexts through four main themes: [1] Archiving of actual working processes of craftspeople and designers, [ 2 ] Works of craftspeople and designers who have achieved their own unique languages of expression, [3] Contemporary artworks using the language of craft, and [4] Archive lounge displaying diverse ways in which Korean craft has been attempting its expansion.
