ABOUT

Your Personal View of (Social) Nudism started with an image of a young girl pointing a Rollei camera towards the lens of another photographer. I discovered it at my grandparent’s home in Twentynine Palms in a pile of discarded papers – a magazine promoting a social nudist lifestyle with a missing cover. I later learned that my grandparents were occasional visitors to nudist parks. I put the magazine aside until coming across again it when moving into my current studio in June 2015.

The series title is derived from a Your Personal View of Nudism, a magazine from 1963 published by Ken Price, a popular photographer in the nudist camps. Early works in the series feature cameras pointed towards the lens of another camera, with hand drawn grids based on the aspect ratio of the camera depicted. All of the images are from magazines that promote social nudism – the texts discuss the etiquette of taking photographs in nudist parks, court cases on censorship and the mail and the qualities of a good nudist picture.

While at MacDowell, I decided to broaden the series, breaking it into “Episodes,” allowing me to play with recurring characters (such as Diane, Ed, June and Alois), themes, and photographic conventions. Experimenting with watercolors for Vinland: Quilt led to incorporating them into Your Personal View as a form of color coding.

While at MacDowell, I completed Episode 1961 and started Episode 1957.
