ABOUT

"When he shall die,

Take him and cut him out in little stars,

And he will make the face of heaven so fine

That all the world will be in love with night

And pay no worship to the garish sun."

– William Shakespeare

“The Face of Heaven”, commissioned by Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art, is an experiental installation composed of small lights shining like stars through the darkness. The work, inspired by Robert Kennedy's eloquent eulogy for his brother John, offers a metaphor of longing and remembrance for those who died in the Sewol ferry tragedy, offering comfort and hope to those who live on.

Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art presents April: the Eternal Voyage, a memorial exhibition conceived to remember the victims of the Sewol ferry disaster and to console their families and friends who lost their loved ones.  April: the Eternal Voyage raises questions on the role of art in contemporary society characterized by the loss of empathic ability, and through this, poses the fundamental question of “what is art?” The contemplative works of the artists seeking to console the sorrows and wounds of the bereaved, while facing the collective anger and fear, sincerely question the role of art since the occurrence of the disaster — what art needs to embody and express, and how art is to interact with the contradictory society.
