The 27th Annual James A. Porter Colloquium on African American Art and Art of the African Diaspora
Honoring the 50th anniversary of the Black Arts Movement, the 27th Annual James A. Porter Colloquium on African American Art will examine the influence of the Black Arts Movements of the 1960s and 1970s on the trajectory of African American art. The upcoming colloquium, “Roots and Branches: Black Arts Movements into the Twenty-First Century,” will celebrate the influence of the Black Art Movement on African American art produced after that period. The  aim is to reflect on the cultural and aesthetic traditions established during the late 1960s and 1970s by BAM artists and assess the cultural impact of this national movement. “Roots and Branches” sets out to define the relationship between the modes of expression central to the Black Arts movement and aesthetic strategies prevalent in contemporary African American art. The colloquium will take place April 8 and April 9, 2016 at Howard University.
