ABOUT

APT artist Katsutoshi Yuasa Is presenting "Light itself", a Solo Exhibition at the Galerie der Stadt Backnang.

In its partial wall-sized woodcuts of Japanese artist Katsutoshi Yuasa connects (* 1978) centuries-old printing techniques with today's digital life world.

As models for his virtuosity executed black and white or colored hand prints are the artist himself recorded snapshots or found images from magazines or the Internet. Idyllic images of untouched or carefully designed nature, among press, documenting shipwrecks or car accidents, a moon landing or a natural disaster. But classic picture themes of European art history, such as pomp still life, vanitas depictions or carnival scenes can be found in peripheral oeuvre Yuasas, inter alia, studied at the Royal College of Art in London.

In a lengthy, meditative work process in which Yuasa traditional Japanese tools and papers used, he transferred to the digital template back into the analog medium of printmaking. Due to the extreme magnification of image templates of the artist to the viewer opens up a new perspective on things that are beyond our media-drenched society often the attention.

The charm of Yuasas poetic work is primarily focused on exciting contrast between the fast held photographic snapshot and the meticulous process of wood cutting, in which the artist appropriates the subject and continually removed by deviations from the template of reality. The fleeting moment of the photograph is thereby charged with a timeless significance.

In some of his new work Yuasa undermines not only deep into the cliché, but in the original image. He zooms in on the subject computer zoom so close that you just can detect individual pixels at first glance, which are then in turn transferred to the printing block and are composed only when viewed from a distance to the motif.
