547 West 27th Street New York, NY

ABOUT

To celebrate the recent release of Question Bridge: Black Males in America (Aperture/Campaign for Black Male Achievement, 2015), join Question Bridge collaborators APT artist Hank Willis Thomas, Chris Johnson, Natasha L. Logan, Bayeté Ross Smith, Deborah Willis, and Rashid Shabazz, Vice President of Communications, Campaign for Black Male Achievement, in a conversation about art, collaboration, and the role of transmedia projects in socially engaged fine art. Moderated by editors Willis and Logan, panelists will share their vision and process for creating an art installation with staying power, which eventually evolved into the Question Bridge publication. Hear the team’s goals for ways the book can be used for advocacy, education, and change.

Aperture Foundation will also serve as the host for New York City’s second Question Bridge recording session. In the gallery, iPad stations will be set up for visitors to record their questions and answers to the interactive platform for Question Bridge. Join the conversation and the movement to represent and redefine black male identity in America.

Question Bridge: Black Males is an innovative, transmedia project that uses video to facilitate a conversation among black men from diverse backgrounds. Originally created by Chris Johnson in 1996, the project was revived by Hank Willis Thomas, Kamal Sinclair, and Bayeté Ross Smith, who filmed over 150 black men in nine American cities, each of whom asked questions and answered those posed by other black men.   This content was used to create a five-screen video installation that has been exhibited at over thirty-five institutions
