ABOUT

The exhibition In My Sky at Twilight presents the work of artist RYU Biho, recipient of 2014 Sungkok Artist of Tomorrow award.

In My Sky at Twilight refers to a poem included in Pablo Neruda’s book Twenty Love Poems and a Song of Despair. As the poetic and literary title suggests, the exhibition reflects RYU’s lyrical attempt to create an intervention of reality through his video, sound and photography works.

RYU Biho is interested in the social wounds that are induced by the rapid industrialization and capitalization that occurred in Korea. Fifty years of modernization has transformed the Korean society exceptionally fast, leaving behind a largely discordant social value structure. For instance, while some people live by the beliefs and habits long held to be standard, others discard them as being traditional. RYU explores the inevitable struggle and conflicts that arise from these diverging perspectives.

RYU‘s works are imbued with nostalgia for the outcasted, and with sympathy for the victims of political and social catastrophes. The artist examines various aspects of social conflicts and pursues to understand the formation of social consciousness. Through his unique artistic explorations, RYU comforts the marginalized and instills human breaths to the lethargic and solitary souls who have lost their connection to reality.
