ABOUT

This summer, the High Museum of Art will present “Sprawl! Drawing Outside the Lines,”an exhibition featuring more than 100 recently acquired works on paper by more than 75 Georgia-based artists. The exhibition will be on view from July 18 through October 4, 2015.

A sequel to the successful 2013 exhibition “Drawing Inside the Perimeter,” which featured work by Atlanta-based artists, “Sprawl!” will include drawings by artists who live and work in Atlanta and other cities in the metro area and beyond, such as Athens, Columbus, Decatur, Lawrenceville and Smyrna. A full list of featured artists is available atwww.high.org.

The drawings in the exhibition act as a roadmap exploring the broad diversity of artistic production and approaches to art-making in Georgia, and the featured works also demonstrate the artists’ overlapping spheres of influence and their divergent interests and priorities.

The High acquired all of the works in the exhibition between June 2013 and May 2015. Many of these acquisitions were made possible by a $60,000 grant from The Antinori Foundation for the purchase of drawings by Atlanta-area artists. In 2010, the High began to acquire drawings by Atlanta-based artists through the Lambert Fund, established through a bequest of the late Judith Alexander, a champion of Georgia artists. In recognition of the High’s effort to promote artistic talent in the metro Atlanta area, The Antinori Foundation established The Antinori Fund to continue the High’s drawings initiative.

“I am enormously grateful to Susan and Ron Antinori, and for our community’s support, to keep this truly important initiative alive,” said Michael Rooks, Wieland Family curator of modern and contemporary art at the High. “Our acquisition of works produced by Georgia artists, representing a cross-section of the tremendous diversity and richness of contemporary art in our region, has made a significant impact among art students, teaching artists and gallerists throughout the Atlanta metro area. This initiative has also captured a snapshot of our ever- evolving art scene over the past five years, providing audiences with an overview of trends, interchanges and associations between and among our city’s artist communities. I hope this initiative will continue to be a catalyst for contemporary art in the state for years to come.”

To mark the closing of “Sprawl!,” the High will host its second Monster Drawing Rally on Sept. 19, 2015. At the fundraiser, 75 local artists will create works live in the High’s Robinson Atrium, and the works will be available for sale that day for $75 each. Proceeds from the sale of the drawings will go toward the purchase of more works on paper by regional artists for the High’s permanent collection.
