ABOUT

AMERINGER | McENERY | YOHE is pleased to announce an exhibition of new paintings by Patrick Wilson. The exhibition will open on 28 May 2015 and remain on view through 3 July 2015. A public reception for the artist will be held on Thursday 28 May from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. The exhibition is accompanied by a publication with an essay by Stephen Westfall.

Squares, rectangles and lines of bright reds, effervescent greens, charged grays and deep blues interweave, creating Patrick Wilson’s complex, yet nuanced geometric abstractions. Color and value are precisely calibrated via numerous thin layers of acrylic paint, which overlap in undulating combinations of translucency and opacity. Destabilizing the picture plane, Wilson’s work picks up on the triumphs of the hard edge painters from previous generations, while clearly staking out territory of his own time and place.

Refusing stasis, Wilson employs clean lines, subtle color
transitions, and meticulous paint handling to activate the
surface. Minute maneuvers of sculptural depth unground
the paintings. Movement, intensity, and speed are the operative terms. No longer content with traditional figure/ground dynamics, Wilson seeks to slowly shift the viewer into a prolonged experience, one in which structure and logic are replaced with pleasure and intuition. Yet, Wilson does not settle for the pleasures of the past, rather, he proposes a new space in which the contingency of being takes place in the here and now. Sometimes jarring, sometimes soothing, Wilson’s paintings reside in the tension where legibility and knowing give way to unexpected encounters not contained by language.
