ABOUT

We're delighted to be able to share with you documentation of Richard Woods' current exhibition Inclosure Acts which is open at Chapter, Cardiff until 14 June.

In his first major public gallery project gallery in the UK in over 5 years, Woods has created ‘Inclosure Acts’ especially for Chapter, a new work in the gallery and for the lightbox that is inspired by both the history of the building – sited as it is on a former cattle market – and by the Acts (1604-1914) that radically transformed open fields and common land in the countryside.

“Woods’ work for Chapter has created a number of similar divisions throughout the building, using Inclosure Acts and the former use of the building’s location as a cattle market to highlight various borders between the haves and the have-nots, interiors and exteriors and for social interactions over the garden fence, back room bar and rural gossiping,” In Through the Outdoor, Gordon Dalton.

The exhibition also includes 2 bodies of work that debuted at WORKS|PROJECTS. In the gallery Woods’ new Inclosure Act works for Chapter keep company with nine of the monumental Mock Tudor Monoprint series. First shown at WORKS|PROJECTS In 2011, these large-scale monoprints on aluminum are hard-edged renditions of Mock Tudor decoration. The paintings are suburbia meets Neo Geo – the past made future.

In the Cafe Bar Woods’  ‘Bad Bricks’ are beautifully simple sculptures made from wood that resembling cartoon bricks. A progression of Woods’ 2014 exhibition Bad Brickwork at WORKS|PROJECTS, their vibrant colours, bright white mortar and thick black edges offer a joyous celebration of the most mundane of building materials.
