THE SPACE BETWEEN

The Space Between explores the relationship between artists and society through the works of 18 artists who, in novel and exciting ways, are making a major contribution to the current visual vocabulary of contemporary Malaysian art.

 

Artists have always played an important role as observers, interpreters and narrators of contemporary life.  In Malaysia, as in every other part of the world, we have often looked to our artists to help us understand the world around us. They have helped us locate our place in a constantly shifting society, and we have relied on their insights into the complexities and contradictions of contemporary Malaysian life.

 

Featuring the works of Ahmad Shukri Mohamed, Ahmad Fuad Osman, Chan Kok Hooi, Chen Wei Meng, Choy Chun Wei, Eiffel Chong, H.H. Lim, Ivan Lam, Jalaini Abu Hassan, Kim Ng, Liew Kung Yu, Noor Azizan Rahman Paiman, Sean Lean, Wong Chee Meng, Umibaizurah Mahir, Vincent Leong, Yau Bee Ling and Yee I-Lann, this exhibition also explores the artist’s ability to produce art which has the power in Lucien Freud’s words “to astonish, disturb, seduce, convince.”

 

The Space Between features a recent work by each of the invited guests which has been paired with an older work that serves as an entry point into the artist’s current artistic practice.
