ABOUT

Gallery Paule Anglim is pleased to present "Twelve Drawings" an exhibition of new mixed media works on paper by New York based artist and filmmaker, Carter.

Carter will exhibit twelve works interweaving drawing and painting with multiple layers of paper. In his ongoing exploration of portraiture and figuration, Carter has constructed hybrid compositions from abbreviated elements of how we read people, and how we decipher artistic style. Toying with the elements of anonymity, isolation and basic human interaction, a coiffed wig or sideburn becomes an abstracted marker of style or sexuality.

Cut-outs of the artist's drawn or painted marks are strategically isolated and pasted together: a clipping of hair, a single eye, a profile, and geometric shapes that reference both modernist sculpture and the multiple types of spaces in which we live. Finding inspiration from advertising layouts, interior design imagery, psychotherapy and Cubism, Carter's delicately crafted and dense drawings provide just as much weight to what is not physically visible in the works as to what we have the opportunity to see.

Carter works in a range of media: painting, sculpture, video and film, and has exhibited internationally with recent exhibitions in New York, Paris, Vienna and London.  His work was shown in the 2006 Whitney Biennial and at London's Royal Academy in "USA TODAY." Carter's full-length feature film, Maladies, starring Katherine Keener and James Franco debuted in 2013 at the Sundance Film festival. His film Erased James Franco 2009 was screened at the Tate Modern, NY MoMA, San Francisco's SFMOMA and the Castro Theater. This will be Carter's third solo exhibition at the gallery.
