ABOUT

DOOSAN Gallery Seoul is pleased to present Ruins from March 4th to April 4th, 2015. A solo exhibition by Sojung Jun who was an artist-in-residence at DOOSAN Residency New York in second half of 2014, Ruinsdisplays 4 works as an extension of Jun’s video pieces about master practitioners of everyday life which she has been working on since 2009.

Jun’s photographs, installations and video works capture the various stories in the life of others she encounters, told through narratives that derive from theatrical play, performance, and classic text. The video works Jun has worked on since 2009 until present focus on the lives of master practitioners-a rope acrobat, a machine embroiderer, a sign painter, a piano tuner, a female diver (Haenyoe), and so on-as a means to address the boundary between art and everyday life. The title of this exhibition Ruins signifies the sense of vulnerability as an artist, foremost an individual, feels in every day. It also symbolizes the process through which her work and attitude as a person and artist are formed through meeting such master practitioners of everyday life. While the metaphorical expressions of social absurdities and violence deeply rooted in their life evoke a feeling of sorrow, the process of their work, obstinate if not obsessive, demonstrates a mysterious sense of beauty as well as the will to overcome it. Jun’s latest works Warm Stone and Angel of Death reference the lives of viewing a stone specialist and a taxidermist respectively, and focus on the relationship between the artist and the subject, the methodology in dealing with memory and documentation, and Jun’s concerns as an artist in reality and lunacy of art.
