ABOUT

Fifteen internationally recognized contemporary artists create paintings, sculpture, installations, video, and films that stress emotions without relying on the finality of classic Romanticism. Belonging to neither a style nor a traditional “school,” the artists and works of art featured in this exhibition embody an outlook forged in often heartbreaking disappointment but never resigned to the social conditions that precipitated the initial pain for failure. This collision or juncture between a romantic ideal (or idealism) and the often harsh and depressing reality of contemporary life, particularly in the aftermath of recent natural and man-made disasters, has made the subject the cornerstone of the creative subtext for the artists whose work is the focus of this exhibition. These artists, like their literary and artistic antecedents, embody an outlook forged in the realities of everyday discouragement, mitigated by either a stoic determination or an inexorable sense of hope and optimism. The resulting artworks capture the existential dilemma of the human condition. Artists in the exhibition include Richard Billingham (England); Berlinde de Bruykere (Belgium); Edward Burtynsky (Canada); Sophie Calle (France); Petah Coyne (United States); Angelo Filomeno (Italy/United States); Jesper Just (Denmark/United States); Mary McCleary (United States); Florian Maier-Aichen (Germany/United States); Wangechi Mutu (Kenya/United States); Julia Oschatz (Germany); Anneè Olofsson (Sweden); David Schnell (Germany); and Ryan Taber/Cheyenne Weaver (United States).
