ABOUT

CHICAGO, IL - rowlandcontemporary is pleased to present Jason Karolak`s solo exhibition, New Paintings & Drawings. The artist will present a body of work that is comprised of his singular forms and structures on canvas and paper. An exhibition catalog with an essay by Michelle Grabner will also be available. The large scale paintings in this exhibition create an initial wallop and are embedded with thoughtful, dark intelligence, sincerity, and a confident directness. Executed with intense focus, these seemingly subconscious constructions are anything but. Karolak`s refined language of shape and form is externalized in such a way as to be at once invented and multireferential.Infinitely intertwining loops, stacked and irregular shapes and meandering lines give meaning to Karolak`s dexterous manipulations of paint, yielding works that are teeming with the vibrancy of a self-assured painter. Smaller works also represented in this exhibition afford a closer inspection of his idiosyncratic and ambitious output.Sometimes quirky, sometimes playful, Jason Karolak`s work is rooted in a sense of inexhaustible curiosity. His scale is both intimate and epic, allowing us to enter his explorations from multiple vantage points through the context of a flourishing and highly personal language.Jason Karolak received an MFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and BFA from Pratt Institute. He has exhibited with Contemporary Art Projects, Chicago, IL, the Beverly Art Center, Chicago, IL, and Marygrove College, Detroit, MI.
