ABOUT

Granum Sinapis refers to the “mustard grain song” of the late mediaeval mystic Meister Eckhart, who was charged with heresy. It is considered the most beautiful testimony of dionysian mysticism in the German language and is inspired by the allegory of the mustard seed, the smallest of all seeds, from which the greatest of things grows, namely a tree, atop which “all birds from the sky can nest” on its branches.

Peter Böhnisch’s works wish to suggest something which lies beyond thought, something that leaves us amazed and that is inextricably linked to tranquility and joy. The wide open spaces of his relief-like assemblages from wood, sand, wax and untreated canvas move it away from the romanticism and melancholy of his earlier drawings, toward a greater objectivity and multiplicity. They communicate a presence and freedom, which can amaze the viewer, just like the miniscule mustard seed.

Böhnisch’s new works have been greatly influenced by the positive and inspiring impression of his time in Giverny. In the small community on the right bank of the Seine lies Monet’s garden with its brilliant display of flowers, lily pond and renowned Japanese bridge. The presentness, which plays such a great role in Böhnisch’s work, was found again by the artist in the Japanese coloured wood cuts of Hokusai – which Monet collected and kept in Giverny.

Peter Böhnisch was born in 1977 in Waiblingen and studied at the Staatlichen Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Karlsruhe. Following his 2011 and 2012 exhibitions, Contemporary Fine Arts is proud to announce the third solo exhibition with the artist.
