ABOUT

INSIDEOUT is Allard van Hoorn’s exhibition for the Open Studios of his 4-months residency at the International Studio & Curatorial Program in New York.

INSIDEOUT consists of a series of 17 paintings and 4 performances that question our relationship to public space investigating notions of inside versus outside, displacement, appropriation, description, activation and translation.

SUNSETS are paintings created by pouring DutchBoy™ household satin paint over 6” x 6” aluminium panels that function as pixels of randomly downloaded and resized images of sunsets as they appear on the internet. Two 32-pixel and

fifteen 2-pixel paintings represent our collective memories of sunsets and coupled with a naming system of the DutchBoy™ colour system results in paintings that are titled Sleepover Sky, My First Kiss, Grandma’s Fragrance etc. Through this appropriation and naming process the work discusses co-ownership of public space and how natural phenomena like sunsets can move from the public domain into the private domain and back again.

DANCING THE WEATHER IN ALL THE ROOMS OF MY HOUSE is a performance piece that lets an invited dancer, Sabine Heubusch, interpret the weather patterns measured through a Portable Weather Station in different spaces on the ISCP premises. The dance will take place in the studios, hallways, toilets, elevator, common spaces, front door portal, kitchenetc..

The piece investigates the idea of ‘atmosphere’ that varies in all different spaces of a building based on its function where humidity, temperature, air-pressure

& altitude are fluctuating and represented, now made visible in movement.

The dancer uses the ‘weather-script’ as a scenario to test its bodily relationship to the embedded dynamics of the building. It distinctly brings an outside indoors as a system to be tried and reflected upon. This performance will take place November 7 at 7:30 & 8:30 pm and Sunday 9, 4 & 5 pm.

WET SOIL In this performance an actor that is not recognisable as such wears a

perfume that is synthesised accurately to represent the smell of a forest floor after rain. The actor, lingering in the studio and other spaces in the building will casually strike up conversations with visitors and at one point recall real memories of visiting a forest after rain. It is a subliminal performance that is designed to possibly trigger a memory in the audience, by chance perhaps.

IT’S BEEN A LONG TIME COMING sees the artist breaking out into singing this single sentence from Sam Cooke’s 1963 song ‘A Change Is Gonna Come’ whilst a vocal coach is leaning into the studio space via projected video-link from The Netherlands. Each time he sings is followed by advice on vocalising techniques like body position, breathing, volume etc.

CONDUCTIVITY is an installation of copper tape on the wall that starts in the artist’s studio and continues over the wall outside into hallways and staircases. The strip of copper tape is about 6 inches high and connects people inside and outside the studio creating an electric current between them as it conducts their joint electromagnetic field. Inside an oscilloscope will measure the voltage created by the people touching the tape in different places and subsequently the readings on this machine will be live-interpreted by an invited musician, Nils Davidse, and played on Moog synthesiser in the studio. The resulting music that is created collectively is a sonic portrait of the building and its users as their bodies function as an antenna conducting the joint electromagnetic field between them and the architecture.
