ABOUT
The Grammar of Order is a new collaboration by artists Tom Hopkins and Giulia Ricci, presented by Pavilion and the Recon festival. The work will be installed atThe Tetley from 22-27 September. A special event will take place on Friday 26 September, 6-8pm.
The Grammar of Order takes inspiration from the bold theories of 19th century architect and designer Owen Jones, who wrote the seminal book, The Grammar of Ornament, which explores the use of colour, geometry and abstraction in decorative design.
During a residency at the Museum of Domestic Design and Architecture at Middlesex University (2012) Giulia Ricci did extensive research into the archives of the Silver Studio Collection, a 19th century interior design firm; this prompted her to focus her attention on the structure of the geometrical patterns and grids of ornamental design. She is interested in the tiling of patterns and their possibility to generate new systems through symmetry, mirroring, repetition, combination and rotation. In response to Jones' designs, Ricci produced a set of patterns, grouped into themes important within her own practice: alphabet, flora, fauna, symmetry, asymmetry, crystals and boxes. While her work is completely abstract, some of the taxonomies hint at figuration, reflecting Ricci's interest in creating texture through a non-representational visual language as well as in the physical process of design.
In The Grammar of Order, sound artist Tom Hopkins takes Ricci's patterns as a graphic score to generate new sounds using human and abstract voices. In turn a projected black and white animation by Ricci responds to the sounds. The work continues the artists' ongoing explorations into the presence of patterns and systems in places and objects.
On 26 September, Tom Hopkins will perform a live interpretation of Ricci's patterns, 6-8pm. Drinks served.
Tom Hopkins is a musician and sound artist based in Leeds. He has a BSc in Sonic Arts from Middlesex University. He has recently collaborated with Anders Rondom on the installations Timepieces, included in the Project Room at Berliner-Liste in September 2013, and Alla Turca, presented at Union Works, London, in June 2012. He is also a member of the band New Build, with Al Doyle and Felix Martin, whose first album, Yesterday was Lived and Lost, was released in spring 2012.
Giulia Ricci lives and works in London. She has an MFA in Fine Art (Sculpture) from the Slade School of Fine Art. Recent solo exhibitions include Order/ Disruption, Ring Here, London, 2011 and Connecting Threads, The Estorick Collection, London, 2010. Recent group shows include Summer Exhibition, Royal Academy of Arts, London, 2011 & 2012 and Crossing Lines, &Model Gallery, Leeds, 2014
