Crystal Palace: The great exhibition of the works of industry of all nuclear nations

Fehily Contemporary, Victoria, Collingwood, 08/14/2014 - 09/06/2014

ABOUT

Ken + Julia Yonetani's Crystal Palace: The great exhibition of the works of industry of all nuclear nations is a bold and challenging response to the 2011 Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant disaster. Named after the grand building designed for the Great Exhibition of 1851 in London, the installation draws out the conflict between technological advancement and its costs and consequences.

The installation comprises a series of opulent green chandeliers that cast UV light. Constructed using specially sourced Uranium glass beads, each chandelier represents a country currently operating nuclear power stations. With the lights switched off, Crystal Palace emanates the haunting green glow of radiation.
