a divided dot

ABOUT

The concept  of the exhibition’s spatial arrangement, titled ‘a divided dot’, has been developed by Marlena Kudlicka.

As Kudlicka writes: "A Typographic Point is the basic unit of measure used for measuring font size and other typographical elements. In the spatial composition entitled ‘a divided dot’, I have referred to the concept of Point in order to accurately define the geometry of space, its divisions into units and components. The typographic point divides the structure of the title – ‘a divided dot’ – into blocks of space. The spatial arrangement of this exhibition, Changing the Field of View. Modern Printing and Avant-garde, is a continuation of my previous project entitled Protocol of errors on.e, where the Point functions as an error dividing the word. For the ‘a divided dot’ phrase, I have designed a diagram where the arrangement of lines and divisions as well as the letter shapes have been turned into an assembly of three-dimensional forms. Displayed on a surface of four hundred square meters of the exhibition hall, they form the structure of its spatial arrangement. This topographic grammar of space is based on the principles of counterpoint. The rectangular outline of the external walls of the museum hall constitutes a book cover enclosing blocks built of walls and cuboid- like glass cases, while the spatial blocks form the book’s letters." The artist refers to the notion of a point in typography which allows her to precisely define the geometry of space. The diagram which is a graphic interpretation of the title of the project has become the foundation of constructing an arrangement of three-dimensional that make up the architecture of the exhibition. Important references for Kudlicka are also Władysław Strzemiński’s concept of functional print and Jan Tschichold’s New Typography.
