ABOUT

The Crossings exhibition thus tries to present a model of a distribution collection, which does not rest in the drawers of depots, but recognizes the problem of medium flatness as a potential for juxtaposing the collection with contemporary artworks. In this way, the new content and paradigms are inserted into the collection that have possibly been overlooked in the past, but what is perhaps most significant in the context of this gesture, is that the integration with a variety of contemporary art practices seeks to go beyond the set medium monolith of the graphic arts that governs the collection of the International Centre of Graphic Arts. This exhibition is therefore a sort of symbolic gesture that tries to draw attention to the fact that the collection does not suffice as a materially marked-out entity, rather its integral part should also become its strategy of distribution. The selection of artworks attempts to portray the extent of the content, form as well as time of the MGLC collection, within which the rationale for the selection was focused on the question of the artist as a kind of chronicler of time, the one that in one way or another records the changes in his environment. Yet this was not at the forefront since the exhibition focuses primarily on the question of the possibility of the collection, its distribution and especially surpassing the monolith of the printmaking medium. This is precisely why the artworks from the collection have been juxtaposed with the works of contemporary authors, who, with the specificities of their art practices, each in their own way, directly question the role of the medium, its sustainability and the significance of its diversity within the context of exhibitions of contemporary visual art. The tension created between the works from the collection of the International Centre of Graphic Arts and the works of the invited authors attempts to create a space for a new reflection on the experience, existence and transience of the medium, and thus surpass the boundary between past and present. And more than anything, to draw attention to the pitfalls that may arise in the context of monolithic classifications of expressive mediums.
