ABOUT

In support of the local artist community in Chai Wan Mei , APT Institute and Latitude 22n presents a group show of Hong Kong APT artists: Tang Kwok Hin , Samson Young, Josef Bares and Alessandro Carboni.

Artists and curators travel extensively as part of their art practice or live abroad in cities of their choice. Coming to a new city can be a turning point for an artist’s practice, but it can also be just another stop, a business as usual of a precarious contemporary arts career. How can we distinguish between those who just pass through and those who leave a trace? When does moving on mean coming back?

We could measure the extent to which artists reflect the experience of a place they passed through – the traces left behind. Traces are marks remaining after action, but these marks do not necessarily have to be marks of our footsteps. Marks could also be left behind in memory or in a notebook. The necessary condition for a trace to exist is that it reveals itself to the viewer – only a trace that is found is a trace.

The exhibition offers an opportunity to search for, and find traces left behind by cities in the work of participating artists. Each artist was selected based on his unique point of view. It is their common concern with geography, urban space and social context which brings them together. Using their own sensibilities, they reflect on the traces left behind by moving through cities as well as their experience of being a stranger in a strange land: Following footsteps and recalling shared memories.
