ABOUT

The Anne Mosseri-Marlio is very pleased to present the second exhibition of Beth Campbell (US, 1971) featuring an installation, sculptures, mobiles and works on paper. Perception, subjectivity and the beingness of objects are the core themes of the new works. The complex matrix of past and future as well as the innersubjectivity and interobjectivity of experience is evident in the drawings and reflected the repetition and form of the objects and sculptures. Questions of perception, the ability to know reality and inevitably, the ability to now one's self is essential to Campbell whose conceptual work is expressed in various medium.

Mind map drawings have been part of Campbell's practice for over a decade. The recent works on black paper incorporate a new composition and premise exploring the regress and progress or past and future contained in things and experiences. The horizontal shapes and lines are more geometric. Additionally, the new drawings incorporate fractured thought sequences that evoke alternative realities or the consequences of events. The new timelines move both forward and backward.

Campbell's previous mobiles evolved from the flow chart drawing series My Potential Future Based on Present Circumstances (shown in 2008) into 3D visualizations or sculptural elements of their own. The newer wall piece and mobile, using oxidized steel wire, are eye catchers, disrupting the field of vision and highlighting the entanglement of perception and objects.

The repetition that constitutes the experience of the everyday or the familiarity of the everyday has preoccupied Beth Campbell whose sculptures and installations incorporate household objects such as chairs, lamps, tables, bookcases, mirrors. In the sculptural work "Pillow Table", 2013, a pillow passes through a table suggesting the dissolution of reality. In the new installation piece, repetition is annunciated by a doubling, stutter in time, or an expression of quantum entanglement. An idiosyncratic pile of junk becomes an object. You experience the object. You become the object. You experience you.

The psychology of experience is annealed in the physical. Such is the world in which her mind travels.
