Inspired by imaginary journeys, Alessandro Roma depicts kaleidoscopically fragmented landscapes, unpopulated interiors, and still lifes that seem to the defy traditional confines of space of time. The artist’s works encompass visions that capture a balance between atmospheres of harmony and entropy, which are depicted through a carefully connected variety of mediums, perspectives and formations in a striking visual expression of equilibrium.
“Through painting I try to create new atmospheres, through collage I try to allow existing images to coexist together, and through drawing I try to underline the passing of forms and styles,” Roma says. Inspired by imaginary journeys he depicts kaleidoscopically fragmented landscapes, unpopulated interiors, and still lifes that seem to the defy traditional confines of space of time.
His body of work, characterised by garish colours and glossy surfaces, makes various references to art history, from Cycladic art, to Lucio Fontana’s ceramics, to the Brutalist architects of the 1950s Milan, who masterfully merged primordial and modern aesthetics. A series of 2010 works, titled after writings by the avant- garde novelist Giorgio Manganelli, exemplify Roma’s style with their oil and enamel depictions of romantic, untamed nature, adorned with organza fabric.
This exhibition will run from 15 March through to 6 April 2014.
