Ed Atkins, Haroon Mirza, James Richards: An Echo Button

Known for their technical experimentation with popular visual culture, sound, and sculpture, the artists will present a project for Times Square that responds to the history and the spectacle of the site: the ball drop on New Year’s Eve; the sound generated by Max Neuhaus’ 1977 sound installation Times Square; and the signs on corporate billboards. This site-specific work consists of visual projections on the Toshiba screens in Times Square as well as a conceptual installation, functioning as an “echo chamber” for the projections in Times Square at the Zabludowicz Collection at 1500 Broadway.

London-based artist Ed Atkins’ (b. 1982, United Kingdom) works predominantly in high-definition video, drawing, and writing to explore notions of materiality and corporeality. The artist often combines film, text, sound and paintings to create a dream-like environment and existential experience for viewers. Major exhibitions include Frieze Film commission, Frieze Fair and Channel 4, London (2011), Art Now at Tate Britain (2011); Cabinet Gallery, London (2011); Limoncello, London (2010); and Transmission, Glasgow (2010). Shortlisted for the Jarman Award (2011).

London and Sheffield-based Haroon Mirza (b. 1977, London, England) attempts to isolate the perceptual distinctions between noise, sound, and music and explores the possibility of the visual and acoustic as one singular aesthetic form. These ideas are examined through the production of assemblages and sculptural installations made from furniture, household electronics, found or constructed video footage and existing artworks combined to generate audio compositions. Major solo exhibitions include Camden Arts Centre, London (2011) and Spike Island, Bristol (2012). Major group exhibitions include The British Art Show 7 (2010) and The Sheffield Pavilion, 11th Istanbul Biennial (2009). Mirza is a recipient of the 2010 Northern Art Prize and the Silver Lion for Promising Young Artist at the 54th Venice Biennale (2011).

James Richards (born Cardiff, 1983; lives and works in London) works with archives of videos, including home movies and mass media footage, which he remixes - chopping, editing and distorting the visuals and the soundtrack and creating a mixtape which inverts the generic into the personal. Solo exhibitions include Chisenhale Gallery, London (2011), Art Now (with Clunie Reid) at Tate Britain (2010), Tramway, Glasgow (2009) and Swallow Street, London (2009). Recent group exhibitions include Younger than Jesus at the New Museum, NY (2009) and Nought to Sixty at ICA London (2009). Richards has curated film programs and screenings at Serpentine Gallery, London (2010), BFI, London (2010), X-Initiative, NY (2009) and Whitechapel Gallery, London (2007).
