Tradition Redefined: The Larry and Brenda Thompson Collection of African American Art

Museum of Contemporary Art, Jacksonville, Missouri, Jacksonville, 04/23/2010 - 08/29/2010

ABOUT

Organized by the David Driskell Center for the study of visual arts and culture of African Americans and the African Diaspora, University of Maryland

This extraordinary private collection presents 72 works by African American artists that document the many expressions of the African Diaspora. The strength of the Thompson’s collecting process is their considered attention to artists who have typically not been recognized in the traditional narratives of African American art. In addition to the acknowledged “masters” with artists such as Radcliffe Bailey, Romare Bearden, David Driskell, and Mildred Thompson, the Thompsons have collected works by artists who have been labeled “emerging,” “unknown,” “outsider,” and more. The result is a collection that redefines the landscape of American art, offering a more inclusive understanding of African American artists and their social concerns. The Thompsons have identified and supported artists inside and outside of the canon, and have cultivated meaningful relationships with a variety of artists and their families that have lasted decades. The fruits of these relationships are highlighted in the exhibition Tradition Redefined: The Larry and Brenda Thompson Collection of African American Art.
